Home Invasions continue plaguing the Metro Atlanta area. Fairburn police say a wheelchair bound homeowner was shot when he pulled a gun in self defense on three armed intruders according to a local Atlanta news report.
According to Police, armed men broke into a home on Greenwood Trace around 4:15 a.m. Family members were awake watching TV when they heard the back door crash in and bullets began flying (more and more we see where these home invaders enter the home and immediately begin firing on anyone in sight!!). The homeowner, who is paralyzed and wheelchair bound from a previous shooting incident, grabbed his own gun to defend himself and his family and a shootout ensued. In an interview with local news sources, the victim stated that he was actually asleep when the gunmen entered his home. He says he sleeps with a loaded gun under his pillow and used it when the armed robbers confronted him. The home owner was shot several times during the gunfight exchange and was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital. At this time, It is unclear if any of the intruders were shot but the wounded homeowner thinks he may have shot at least one of the suspects. Police have alerted area hospitals to keep an eye out for gunshot wound victims seeking medical attention.
Police said the gunmen demanded cash, and when there was none in the house, they stole the homeowner's cellphone. The victim believes that had he not had his firearm and returned fire when the home invaders began shooting at him, that they would have just murdered him where he lay.
This is one of the harsh realities of defending your home against violent home invaders. Tools, Timing, and Tactics are all key elements in being able to properly defend your home. Merely owning a firearm without adequate training IS NOT enough to prevail against multiple attackers. More than likely in this unfortunate incident, the homeowners inability to move out of the area of danger quickly lended to him being wounded. Proper planning for situations such as this, HARDENING YOUR HOME AGAINST UNWANTED ENTRY, and knowing how to properly defend your home (proper defensive tactics) are all paramount in defending your family and saving lives. My condolences go out to the family in this unfortunate incident.
